How obesity can be dealt with

There are treatments for obesity

Thousands of people have successfully lost weight and have kept it off, and that is encouraging to other people also suffering from obesity who are determined enough to do what it takes to help themselves live longer. In today's world, there are many effective treatment options for those who need to manage their weight. Surgery can be combined with dietary, behavior, or drug therapy, and as weight is dropped, physical activity can increase. Recommendations for which treatment would turn out to be the most beneficial are based on a ten percent of the entire body weight loss.

Dietary therapy is done by customizing a diet that will reduce the number of calories that are consumed. This will be a slow but steady weight loss process. With this method of weight loss, the patients are taught about food composition, how to determine which foods are the best to buy, and about the best ways to prepare those foods.

Physical activity is a crucial part of losing weight and especially keeping it off. All that is needed for moderate weight loss is physical activity for thirty minutes everyday (or at least most days) of the week. Waist size can be decreased by physical activity. Some options are running, speed walking, bicycle riding, swimming, or any other aerobic activity. Begin slowly and as you feel more capable of more intense exercise gradually increase the difficulty of your exercises. Select activities that you will enjoy doing and do them on a regular basis.

Behavior therapy works by changing diet and exercise patterns and other unhealthy habits to refined behaviors that are designed to promote weight loss. Methods of behavioral therapy include keeping track of diet and exercise in a journal, consciously avoiding high-risk tempting situations, giving rewards when someone does something well, and changing what were once discouraging beliefs about weight loss and body image to positive and realistic ones.

Drug therapy is useful for weight loss and keeping the weight off. Drug treatment should only be used appropriately. Those using the weight loss drugs should be regularly checked on to make sure the drug is still working safely and effectively. There are three weight loss drugs that have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Orlistat is the newest one, and it blocks about 30% of dietary fat from being absorbed by the body. Phentermine is an appetite suppressant that has been available for a long time. Sibutramine works by telling the brain that the stomach is full.

Combining diet therapy and increasing physical activity will result in more weight loss than diet alone or exercise alone. Combining behavior therapy and drug therapy is a treatment that is being researched because it is believed that it could be very effective.

Then of course, surgery is always an option. However, it is an extreme because surgery is only recommended as a treatment option for people with severe obesity and those who suffer from serious medical problems caused by the disease. Gastric Bypass Surgery modifies the stomach and/or the intestines so that th amount of food that can be eaten is greatly decreased. Surgery has a very good reputation for producing good results and it gives the morbidly obese patient a long-term method of weight control. In order to get surgery, the patient needs to be completely motivated and determined to make major changes in their lifestyle.
